AUCKLAND, New Zealand — 8 June 2026 — The International Contemporary Traditional Architects Association (ICTAA) has announced that its 2026 Pacific Research Tour will include an initial mapping and field study across New Zealand’s North Island. This research initiative is a critical component of a broader multi-nation regional tour that also includes comprehensive architectural assessments in Fiji and Samoa.
The North Island project will uniquely focus on documenting both indigenous Māori architecture and historic colonial structures, examining how these distinct building styles have adapted to regional environmental demands. Researchers will evaluate the inherent disaster resilience, structural longevity, and specific cultural aesthetics of these buildings, looking for ways their time-tested methodologies can be seamlessly combined with contemporary engineering.
The insights gathered from this study are intended to create a practical design framework for future regional development. By highlighting successful historical adaptations, the ICTAA aims to provide local architects and international firms commissioned for New Zealand projects with the tools to build sustainable, climate-resilient residential and public infrastructure that deeply respects local heritage.
