SUVA, Fiji — 12 June 2026 — Members of the Architects Association (AA) have arrived in Fiji on 12 June 2026 to commence initial research and mapping project focused on the country’s rich architectural heritage.
The delegation aims to document aspects of traditional Fijian architecture, specifically evaluating its inherent resilience against severe weather events, alongside its highly distinct and globally attractive local aesthetic.
“Traditional Fijian architecture is not just a relic of the past; it is a sophisticated masterclass in sustainable, climate-adaptive design,” said architect Jiri Lev. “By mapping these techniques, we want to empower local architects and stakeholders to champion this heritage and ensure that international firms respect, preserve, and elevate this locally specific aesthetic which helps make Fiji so attractive and unique.”
The initial field research will involve consultations with local cultural experts, builders, and architectural stakeholders in Viti Levu and surrounding communities.
The AA invites local architecture and design practitioners, as well as general public, to make suggestions and recommendations relevant to the research project.
