APIA, Samoa — 10 June 2026 — Representatives of the International Contemporary Traditional Architects Association (ICTAA) are scheduled to land in Apia on 17 June 2026 to begin a preliminary mapping and research initiative centred on traditional Samoan architecture.
This upcoming visit marks a crucial chapter in the association’s ongoing multi-nation Pacific tour, which connects field research across several island nations.
The research team in Samoa will document both historic heritage structures—such as the iconic fale—and their modern adaptations. A primary focus will be evaluating how these designs naturally resist cyclones and severe weather, while maintaining their uniquely striking local aesthetic. With climate adaptation a pressing regional priority, the ICTAA hopes to demonstrate how these historic, time-tested construction methods can be combined with modern engineering principles.
The project’s ultimate goal is to establish a design framework. This will help local architects, as well as international firms hired for projects in Samoa, elevate and build upon traditional concepts when creating new residential, commercial, and public infrastructure.
According to ICTAA architect Jiri Lev, “traditional Samoan architecture provides brilliant blueprints for structural flexibility, natural ventilation, and community-focused spaces. During our current research trip, we are charting a comprehensive map of Pacific architectural resilience. We want to ensure future regional development honours the local aesthetic while championing proven, indigenous climate solutions,” Lev said.
While in Samoa, the ICTAA delegation will work alongside local builders, cultural authorities, and community stakeholders. A summary detailing the project’s insights and recommendations will be provided to local architectural organisations once the tour concludes.
Public Invitation
The ICTAA warmly invites local design practitioners, architects, academic researchers, and members of the general public to submit suggestions, insights, or recommendations that could assist and enrich this research project, via architectsassociation.org or WhatsApp +61456532529.
