APIA, Samoa — 17 June 2026 — Representatives Architects Association (AA) have arrived in Apia to begin a preliminary mapping and research initiative centred on traditional Samoan architecture as part of 2026 Pacific Research Tour, which connects field research across several island nations.
The research team in Samoa will document both historic heritage structures and their modern adaptations. A primary focus will be evaluating how these designs naturally resist severe weather events, while maintaining their uniquely striking local aesthetic.
The project’s ultimate goal is to establish a design framework. This will help local and international architects working in Samoa elevate and build upon traditional materials and aesthetic.
According to architect Jiri Lev, “traditional Samoan architecture provides brilliant blueprints for structural flexibility, natural ventilation, and community-focused spaces. During our current research trip, we are charting a comprehensive map of Pacific architectural resilience. We want to ensure future regional development truly speaks the local aesthetic language, without undue compromise or modernist creep,” said Lev.
While in Samoa, the AA delegation will work alongside local builders, cultural authorities, and community stakeholders. The AA warmly invites local design practitioners and general public to submit suggestions, insights, or recommendations that could assist this research project.
