International Architects in Fiji to Map Disaster-Resilient Traditional Design

Suva

SUVA, Fiji — 5 June 2026  — Members of the International Contemporary Traditional Architects Association (ICTAA) are arriving in Fiji on 12 June 2026 to commence initial research and mapping project focused on the country’s rich architectural heritage.

The delegation aims to document aspects of traditional Fijian architecture, specifically evaluating its inherent disaster resilience against severe weather events, alongside its highly distinct and globally attractive local aesthetic.

As climate resilience becomes a critical priority across the Pacific, the ICTAA’s field research seeks to highlight how centuries-old building techniques can merge with modern engineering. The findings are intended to serve as a foundational blueprint showing how these time-tested designs can be enhanced, adapted, and built upon by local practitioners, as well as international architects commissioned to undertake commercial, residential, or public works in Fiji.

“Traditional Fijian architecture is not just a relic of the past; it is a sophisticated masterclass in sustainable, climate-adaptive design.” said architect Jiri Lev, ICTAA. “By mapping these techniques, we want to empower architects to champion their heritage and ensure that international firms respect, preserve, and elevate the locally specific aesthetic that makes Fiji entirely unique.”

The initial mapping phase will involve consultations with local cultural experts, builders, and architectural stakeholders in Viti Levu and surrounding communities. A summary of the research findings and design recommendations will be shared with other professional bodies upon the conclusion of the visit.

ICTAA invites local architecture and design practitioners and researchers, as well as general public, to make suggestions and recommendations relevant to the research project.

International Contemporary Traditional Architects Association (ICTAA) is an emerging global network of architects, researchers, and designers dedicated to preserving traditional building methodologies and integrating heritage-based design into contemporary, resilient architecture and urban planning.
